Death Toll Rises To 32 In The Congo Volcano Eruption

At a distance of 15 km from Nyiragongo, there was a series of earthquakes. Which had reported no casualties according to the officials. But the earthquake started to crack the land beneath which created panic among the locals.

Authorities said the scattered lava destroyed more than 500 homes in the village. The death toll has risen to 32 so far. This is likely to increase further, said Joseph Makundi, head of civil defense in North Kivu Province.

The volcano erupted on the outskirts of Goma, Congo. Five people died of suffocation while cooling lava north of Goma. Another man was hospitalized with difficulty in breathing, said civil society leader Mambo Kawaya.

 Nine people were burned as lava flowed from the volcano inundating homes. The truck overturned while transporting prisoners from Goma prison when the volcano erupted. Fourteen people traveling in the vehicle died while trying to escape. Congolese authorities carried out relief and rehabilitation work.

More than 20,000 people have been left homeless by a volcanic eruption in Congo. Dozens of people have been killed and up to 40 are missing, the United Nations said on Wednesday.

 In addition, the volcanic eruption destroyed hundreds of homes. Congo has a population of about 2 million. Approximately 5,000 people fled across the border into Rwanda at the time of the incident.

Another 25,000 have taken refuge in the northwestern part of Sake, a UN spokesman said.

A delegation of government ministers, including the Congolese health minister, has arrived in Goma and is carrying out relief operations.

Mahinda also added The volcano is still active, and earthquakes have been detected, urging residents to remain careful.
