Vanitha Gupta the first Indian-American to hold the office of Associate Attorney General

Vanitha Gupta, a 46-year-old Indian-origin, civil rights lawyer, will hold a key position in the US government. Vanitha Gupta has been selected as the Associate Attorney General by the US senate. 

This is the first time a non-white person has been elected Associate Attorney General, the third-highest office in the U.S. judiciary. Vanitha Gupta has created history as the Indian-American woman to hold the office of associate attorney general.

Republican senator of Alaska, Lisa Murkowski set apart from her party to support and voted in favor of Vanitha Gupta in Wednesday’s vote in the Senate on the issue. This sealed the women’s election with 51–49 votes through the historic confirmation.

US Vice President Kamala Harris came to the Senate to exercise her vote in case of a ‘tie’. The Senate has a total of 100 members 50 members each from both parties.

Vanitha Gupta started her legal career at the age of 28. Served as Assistant Attorney General on Civil Rights during the Barack Obama administration.

 Ms. Gupta is the first person of color to hold the third-highest rank in the Dept. of Justice and the U.S. Senate to vote 51-49 to confirm Vanitha Gupta to be an Associate General Attorney.

Before the vote, President Joe Biden said that Ms. Gupta was a very skilled and respected’ Indian-origin lawyer, who has spent her entire career fighting racial equality and justice and also congratulated her on once approved by the Senate.
