The Pegasus spyware scandal that rocked the country last year has resurfaced. India bought the spyware from Israel in 2017, according to a sensational article in the New York Times international magazine.

The report states that Pegasus is part of spyware, including missiles, as part of a defense deal between India and Israel for the purchase of sophisticated weapons and surveillance equipment. The New York Times reports that the Pegasus affair has been under investigation for almost a year. The controversy erupted when journalists, human rights activists, and opposition leaders’ phones were reportedly hacked in several countries, including India, with the help of NGO’s Pegasus spyware.
The New York Times recently published a report entitled “The War for the World’s Most Powerful Cyber Weapon”, which states that NSO has been selling its software worldwide to several intelligence agencies and law enforcement agencies for over a decade. It claims that its software is unmatched, promising that iPhone or Android smartphones can track encrypted communications consistently and reliably. The report also mentioned that the purchase happened when Prime Minister Narendra Modi first visited Israel in July 2017
The New York Times reported that during the visit, a $ 2 billion defense agreement was reached between the two countries, including Pegasus and the missile system.
Benjamin Netanyahu then visited India, and in June 2019 India voted to deny Palestinian human rights body observer status in support of Israel at the UN Economic and Social Council, the report said. However, PTI contacted the Center on the New York Times report but declined to comment immediately.
