Bollywood fashion trends have evolved through ages and are continuing to be a big influencer in India’s fashion trends. In India, Fashion has always been inspired by Bollywood. We are not the ones who follow big brand fashion parades, but we do get inspired by our Bollywood fashion icons.

Be it women’s fashion or men’s we always look up to Bollywood as a style guide.

This has been the same for eras now. None of the Bollywood fashion trends have faded or wiped out, it has always evolved.

Let’s check out some of the Bollywood fashion goals from the ’60s till date that has inspired our wardrobe.

Bollywood Fashion Trends 1960’s

It won’t be wrong if we mark this era of fashion as a blend of Indian culture clubbed with graceful styling.

Madhubala’s iconic ‘Anarkali‘ suit in ‘Mughal-E-Azam‘ has still been a part of our wardrobe as a traditional outfit.

Another one is the unique way of tightly draped saree by Mumtaz, which has been recreated many times till now in our Indian Cinema. Most recently we have seen Deepika and Priyanka recreating this saree look.

Bollywood Fashion Trends 1970’s

The ’70s was the era when Bollywood fashion took a turn to boldness with sheer class and elegance.

Dimple Kapadia’s polka-dotted tops have been a part of every generation. It was such a trend that polka dot design was named as ‘Bobby Print’ after Dimple’s debut movie Bobby. Be it kid, teenager, or grown-up every woman has once worn this design.

Jumpsuit one of the funkiest clothing was first trended by ‘Zeenat Aman‘ in the famous song ‘Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko‘. And, now it’s go-to wear for our Bollywood divas and also us.

At least a single piece of Jumpsuit is a must in our wardrobe as it is way too comfy and trendy.

Bollywood Fashion Trends 1980s

It was the era of chiffon sarees and who else could be the Iconic saree trendsetter other than our beloved ‘Sridevi‘. The way she carried all her sarees was a grace, vogue, and elegance in herself which I believe no one can still match up to.

The Red and white chiffon saree she wored with such divinity for the cameo song ‘Har Kisiko Nahi Milta Yahaa Pyar Zindagi Main’ was the best offering in the movie Jaanbaaz. Be it the blue chiffon saree in Mr. India, where she flaunted her sensuality with grace or the freshness she bought with the sunflower yellow chiffon saree in the song ‘Tere Mere Hothon Mein‘ in Chandni. This timeless beauty has taken the Saree game trend to the next level.

She has shown the world how elegant, graceful, and artistic the Indian attire-Saree can be when styled beautifully.

Bollywood Fashion Trends 1990s

This was the time when the fashion game took a sharp turn and the designer started experimenting and introducing the western trend actively. There were innumerable trendsetters in the 90s to pick from.

Here are my personal favorites: The Dungaree worn by Kajol in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was a major fashion desire for all the 90s ladies.

The Athleisure styled on Karishma and Madhuri in Dil To Pagal Hai was a major fashion goal. The craze for this sporty piece is still being followed as the trendy gym wear.

The 90s fashion will remain incomplete without mentioning the name of the then fashionista Urmila Matondkar from Rangeela. The costume styled by the Manish Malhotra for Rangeela had it all, which is back in trend and an absolute wishlist for our wardrobe.

Starting from the oversized T-shirts and high waist shorts, cute skater dresses, the undeniable LBDs, Blue Denim Shirt, quirky off-shoulder crop tops, and the sensuous chemise for the beachwear, all these are the wishbags for every girl’s closet.

Bollywood Fashion Trends 2000s

Fashion in 2000 was all set to change the fashion game in Bollywood. It marked the start of notable appearances in Cannes by Aishwariya, Deepika, Kangana, Sonam Kapoor, and many more.

Kareena Kapoor, the fashion diva herself along with Manish Malhotra played an influential role in transforming the Bollywood fashion trend. Manish Malhotra’s designed outfits for ‘Poo’ in ‘K3G‘ and the way Kareena carried them all are major fashion goals since then.

The peachy pastel shade of Kareena Wala Lehenga from K3G has been a trendsetter for Indian lehengas. The ‘Geet’ look from Jab We Met, Patiala with a long Top or strappy top has become a craze within young Indian women. Hooded short denim jackets over Kurtis, phulkari scarves, short kurta Patiala salwar suits, not to forget the black corset over white off-shoulder top paired with a red skirt anything and everything she wored in ‘Jab We Met’ made us drool over all her styles. And, I am sure these girls next door styling pieces holds an irreplaceable place in our wardrobe.

There are countless divas from early and late 2000, who have been a great influencer in our fashion journey. To name a few more would be Rani Mukherjee as Maya from Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, the Manish Malhotra designer sarees in the song ‘Tumhi Dekho Na‘ made us go back to shopping for chiffon and net sarees. Rani’s other offering was the collared short kurta with Patiala salwar from Bunty Aur Babli, which became a rage amongst the ladies back then.

The short Denim skirts from the movie Dhoom started with Esha Deol to Aishwariya, which was another must-have essential in our wardrobe.

Deepika Padukone’s printed kurta with red leggings from the movie Love Aaj Kal has become a go-to look for many office and college-goers ladies. The printed long palazzos and tank top fever started from Deepika’s look in Cocktail, since then long palazzos have been an experimental part of our wardrobe.

Last but not least, another favorite style guide of mine is Alia Bhat as Kaira in ‘Dear Zindagi‘. The character and the outfits worn by Alia were so much relatable to most of us. The monochrome tank tops with torn jeans, the layered outfits punched with jackets or shrugs over strappy tops, long strappy maxi dresses, short skater dress paired with shirts or jackets, I can go on and on. Basically, I loved all her outfits as they were peppy, comfy, funky, and sexy at the same time. Some day I hope to have all of them.

These were my favorite Bollywood divas who not only change the trend of fashion in Bollywood but also made us upgrade our wardrobe from time to time.
